OmvangThis collection contains photographs, genealogical information, correspondence, J. J. Smith estate documents, Los Cuates Land Co. records, Bank of Esparto records, Esparto Union High School yearbooks, N. Castle Smith's student records from the University of California, records from the Sacramento Valley Electric Railroad Co., and other materials from the J. J. Smith family of Brooks. J. J. Smith received the former Alfa Dune Ranch north of County Road 78 and west of SR 16 as a wedding gift from his father in law when he married Mary Winter in 1901. When J. J. Smith died in 1935, he left the ranch to his eight children, with his son N. Castle Smith as manager. Castle died in 1971, and J. C. Newman bought out the other heirs. J. C. Newman's son and daughter-in-law moved onto the ranch to help manage it for him. The son, Michael Curtis Newman, sold the ranch to the Rancheria in 2002 (now the Seka Hills olive processing facility).
