Looking toward the confluence of the Sacramento and Feather Rivers which was the site of Fremont (Elkhorn District). Three men on the bank are exhuming old bricks and bits of hardware. Location of '49 town line of trees marks river course. Fremont was founded March 22, 1849 by Jonas Spect, who was the first non-Indigenous person to discover the Feather River-Yuba River mines. At that time, a sand bar prevented large river boats from entering the Feather River, and the location was assumed to be the head of navigation.
