Thermometer in wooden case; "Dr. Forbes Specifications, Ernest Schultz & Co., Ilmenau (Germany ). Barhep - New York". This thermometer was used to measure the temperature of water used to give cold, warm or hot baths as part of their medical treatment. The scale is measured in Fahrenheit and is marked with the temperature of water when it is freezing (0-32°F), cold (45°F), cool (66°F), tepid (86°F), warm (98°F), and hot (105°F). Invented by Dr John Forbes (1787-1861), a Scottish physician, these thermometers were commonly used in hospitals.
