Confluence of the Feather and Sacramento Rivers viewed from the site of the town of Fremont. A tall, bare tree in the foreground overlooks a broad expanse of water at the junction of two great rivers. "River Junction: In the winter of 1849, the high water washed out the sand bank, enabling boats to travel up the Feather River. Marysville took the place of Fremont, and in a few years [Fremont] was deserted. Fremont was the first county seat of Yolo County. In it were Yolo County's first town, first store, first hotel, first frame building, first church, first Sunday School and first murder. This print received the Gold Medal award in the 1947 California State Fair Historical Photograph Competition."
