Edith White

Oil painting on canvas, framed, signed Edith White and dated 1889 (lower left); untitled painting of Native American basket with grapes. Size: Canvas is 17.5 x 15.5"; wood/gold leaf frame, is 25 x 23 x 2". History: Donor stated that the painting belonged to her grandmother (name may be Kellogg) who knew the artist. Grandmother lived in the Calistoga-St. Helena area of California in the 1880's, but Marge thought her grandmother might have known Edith White when both were in Southern CA. When she was a child the donor remembers seeing the painting in her grandmother's dining room in Napa County. The painting was a cherished treasure. It always was hung in an importand place in her family's home. In 1971 Marge inherited the painting. Edith White (1855-1946) was one of the foremost flower painters in CA.
